Inside the AGM That Showed Cryptic Masonry at Its Very Best

The Somerset and Wiltshire District of Royal and Select Masters held its Annual General Meeting with a strong and enthusiastic attendance that filled the day with warmth, camaraderie and genuine pride in the Order. The District was honoured by the presence of the Deputy Grand Master, Paul Norman, together with several District Grand Masters and a number of distinguished guests from across the wider Masonic community. Members from throughout the District were also out in force, showing the continued strength and unity of their Councils.

A highlight of the meeting came when the Deputy Grand Master presented Patron Certificates to each Council in recognition of their generous support for the Grand Masters one hundred and fifty year anniversary appeal. The presentation was warmly received and reflected the shared commitment across the District to uphold and promote the charitable aims of the Order.

The District now enjoys a membership of around one hundred and sixty companions, a clear sign that the Order is flourishing. During the meeting the District Grand Master, Keith Surry, expressed his appreciation for the commitment shown by his officers and members. He remarked, “I am deeply grateful to my team for their hard work and dedication. Their efforts are what make this Order such a success throughout the District.”

Throughout the day there was a tangible sense of pride in the heritage of the Royal and Select Masters. Often known as Cryptic Masonry, the Order takes its name from the ancient vaults or hidden chambers that form the central theme of the ceremonies. These degrees complete the story that links the Master Mason degree to the Royal Arch and explore the safeguarding of important knowledge, together with the values of fidelity, foresight and service. For many members they offer a deeper understanding of the Masonic journey and enrich the lessons found in the craft and Royal Arch.

The day concluded with a very well received roast beef banquet at the festive board, which provided an excellent opportunity for further fellowship and good conversation. It was a fitting end to a positive and enjoyable District gathering.

The AGM closed in a spirit of goodwill and optimism, with the Order continuing to prosper in Somerset and Wiltshire.
